About Tamil Nadu Highways
In the year of 1946, the separate Highways Department was established and in the year of 2008, it will be renamed as Highways and minor ports Departments. This department is mainly responsible for construction and maintenance of roads including the national highways, state highways and the major districts roads in Tamil Nadu. Also, it operates through 7 wings they are, Construction and Maintenance Wings, National Highway Wings, NABARD and rural Roads Wing, Metro Wing, Projects Wings, Investigation and Design Wing and the Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project Wing. These operations spread in 31 districts and 450 subdivisions and 120 divisions. In the year of 2010, the Tamil Nadu road network has a total road length of 1,99,040km along with this 14257km of Highway Network which is designed as National Highways and the State Highways. The total length of the National Highways in Tamil Nadu are 4,873 and the State Highways total Length is 9,384. The repair work on rural work, district roads are undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project Wing of HMPD with NHAI. In the year of 2003, the World Bank sanctioned US$ 348 million loan for road enhancement in Tamil Nadu.
